Charlottesville, VA  9/30/25 — The Virginia Gastroenterological Society was proud to host an evening with Dr. Nicholas ShaheenBozymski-Heizer Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Co-Director of the North Carolina Translational & Clinical Research Center (NC TraCS), and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Dr. Shaheen delivered a state-of-the-art lecture on Barrett’s Esophagus at the Ivy Inn, attended by University of Virginia faculty, fellows, medical residents, and community clinicians. Dr. Shaheen offered insights on the latest methods for screening and surveillance for Barrett’s, treatment methods for dysplastic Barrett’s, and the future of non-endoscopic diagnosis. A lively question and answer session ensued, followed by dinner and discussion. The event was hosted by Dr. Neeral Shah, Professor of Medicine at the UVa Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Past-President of the Virginia Gastroenterological Society.

 

This week, Dr. Shaheen is serving as an Edgar Achkar Visiting Professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, sponsored by the American College of Gastroenterology.  The evening program was designed to permit faculty, trainees, and community gastroenterologists to interact and learn from one of the world’s experts on esophageal disease. The program was supported by an unrestricted Community Education Grant, available by application to all members of the Virginia Gastroenterological Society.
